Black Swan's Purple Primer is a purple, non-bodied, fast acting solvent used to soften, clean and prepare plastic pipe and fittings prior to assembly. Purple Primer can be used with all types, schedules and classes of PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. A low VOC formulation.

WHY PRIMER IS USED

In most cases a successful solvent cement joint can be made without using a primer/cleaner. But, if you want to increase probability of making a successful joint, using a primer/cleaner is the thing to do.

Purple Primer accomplishes two things. First, it will clean the pipe and fittings of any dirt, oil, grease and other foreign matter. If the plastic is dirty before making a connection it will be more difficult for the cement to bond the pipe and fitting together. Second, Purple Primer will soften the plastic. This allows the cement the opportunity of skipping a step (softening the plastic) and to go immediately to the process of fusing the pipe and fitting together. Note - softening the plastic in cold weather is especially important because it will noticeably speed up the process of making a solvent cement joint.

Using Purple Primer is always recommended to make a good connection. And remember, in most locations using a primer/cleaner is mandatory according to local codes.

WHY PURPLE?

Using a "clear" primer makes it impossible for any inspector to determine whether a primer has been used. Because of this the market place has called for a primer that has a purple color. In this way an inspector can see the purple color on the pipe and fittings and can know for sure that a primer has been used.

WHAT TO DO IF PURPLE PRIMER IS SPILLED

 DIRECTIONS

Store below 110ºF (44ºC). Use only on PVC and CPVC plastic. Use within 2 years of date stamped on bottom of can. Read Black Swan Product Bulletin and GHS.

  1. Cut pipe square and deburr. Clean and dry joining surfaces.

  2. Check dry fit. Fitting should go over end of pipe easily but become tight about 1/3 to 2/3 of the way on.

  3. Use a suitable applicator at least ½ the size of the pipe diameter; for larger sizes use brush or roller. Do not use a rag as repeated contact with skin may cause irritation or blistering.

  4. Apply primer to inside of fitting equal to socket depth; without delay, coat pipe and end up to socket depth until soft. Apply again to fitting socket. Avoid puddling.

  5. On bell-end pipe, do not coat or allow primer to run beyond socket depth.

  6. To check penetration, scratch surface. Recoat if necessary. Actual time for priming action is affected by pipe diameter and temperature.

  7. Immediately while surfaces are still wet, apply appropriate Black Swan cement following directions on cement can.

CAUTION

KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. Do not take internally. Keep away from heat, spark, open flame, other sources of ignition. Vapors may ignite explosively. Use only in well ventilated area: if not well ventilated, use forced ventilation or NIOSH approved respirator. Avoid breathing vapors. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Use skin and eye protection. Eye contact may cause injury. Keep container closed.

FIRST AID

If inhaled, move into fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen and call physician. In case of eye or skin contact, flush with water for 15 minutes. If irritation persists, get medical attention. If swallowed, give 2 glasses of water. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING. Contact physician immediately.

Oatey 32 oz. Purple CPVC and PVC Primer

This primer is an NSF-listed, aggressive primer designed for use on all schedules and classes of PVC and CPVC pipe and fittings. It removes surface dirt, grease, and grime while pre-softening the pipe to allow for a fast, secure solvent weld. The purple tint provides visible verification that a primer has been used, which is ideal for areas where plumbing code requires this proof. It also applies easily with an included in-lid dauber. This product is certified to UL Greenguard Gold and meets California South Coast Air Quality Management Districts (SCAQMD) requirements, making it compliant with various health and environmental standards. This primer is recommended for commercial and large diameter thermoplastic piping systems, specifically CPVC Sch. 40 / 80. It is also low VOC (volatile organic compound) and high performance, meeting ASTM Standard F656 and complying with NSF/ANSI 61 health effects requirements.
